Meaning owth

a.  Probably from 225 ( 'ûth   ); in the sense of appearing.

b.  A signal (literally or figuratively) as a flag, beacon, monument, omen, prodigy, evidence.

1.  Owth means "sign; mark".

2.  This word represents something by which a person or group is characteristically marked.  This is its emphasis in Genesis 4:15, "And the Lord said to him, Therefore, if anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark or sign upon Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him. "

3.  In Exodus 8:23 God promises to "put a division between my people and thy people:tomorrow shall this sign be" (cf Exodus 12:13, "The blood shall be for a token or sign to you upon [the doorposts of] the houses where you are, [that] when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall be upon you to destroy you when I smite the land of Egypt. " ).

4. Numbers 2:2, "The Israelites shall encamp, each by his own [tribal] standard or banner with the ensign of his father’s house, opposite the Tent of Meeting and facing it on every side." uses owth to represent a military banner, while Job 21:29, "Have you not asked those who travel this way, and do you not accept their testimony [owth] and evidences [owth]— " uses the word of the identifying banners of nomadic tribes.

5.  Rahab asked her Israelite guests for a trustworthy "mark" which they stipulated to be the scarlet cord by which she lowered them out of her window and outside Jericho's walls; Joshua 2:12, "Now then, I pray you, swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father’s house, and give me a sure sign, "  and Joshua 2:18, "Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall bring your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household into your house. "

6.  The word means "sign" as a reminder of one's duty. This usage first appears in Genesis 9:12, "And God said, This is the token of the covenant (solemn pledge) which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: " (cf Genesis 9:4-15).

7.  A reminding token is represented by owth: "It shall be as a sign to you upon your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. " [Exodus 13:9].

8.  A "sign" eventually showing the truth of a statement is indicated by owth: "God said, I will surely be with you; and this shall be the sign to you that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain [Horeb, or Sinai]. " [Exodus 3:12]

9.  In passages such as Exodus 4:8, owth represents a miraculous "sign", "[Then God said] If they will not believe you or heed the voice or the testimony of the first sign, they may believe the voice or the witness of the second sign. ".

Personal Note Exodus 4:6-9 6 The Lord said also to him, Put your hand into your bosom. He put his hand into his bosom, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, as white as snow. 7 [God] said, Put your hand into your bosom again. So he put his hand back into his bosom, and when he took it out, behold, it was restored as the rest of his flesh. 8 [Then God said] If they will not believe you or heed the voice or the testimony of the first sign, they may believe the voice or the witness of the second sign. 9 But if they will also not believe these two signs or heed your voice, you shall take some water of the river [Nile] and pour it upon the dry land; and the water which you take out of the river [Nile] shall become blood on the dry land. Jesus in the flesh is the second sign?

10.  "Signs" are attestations of the validity of a prophetic message, but they are not the highest or final test of a prophet; he must speak in conformity to past revelation (cf Deuteronomy 13:1-5).

Deuteronomy 13:1-5

1 If a prophet arises among you, or a dreamer of dreams, and gives you a sign or a wonder,
2 And the sign or the wonder he foretells to you comes to pass, and if he says, Let us go after other gods—gods you have not known—and let us serve them,
3 You shall not listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being.
4 You shall walk after the Lord your God and [reverently] fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice, and you shall serve Him and cling to Him.
5 But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has talked rebellion and turning away from the Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of bondage; that man has tried to draw you aside from the way in which the Lord your God commanded you to walk. So shall you put the evil away from your midst.

11. Several passages use owth of omens and/or indications of future events; 1 Samuel 14:10, "But if they say, Come up to us, we will go up, for the Lord has delivered them into our hand, and this will be our sign."

Personal Note Jonathan was not sure whether to attack the Philistines.  He just placed his faith in God to save him, 1 Samuel 14:6, "And Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For there is nothing to prevent the Lord from saving by many or by few." He did not go into some earnest or hard prayers.  He simply take it that if the enemy said "Wait until we come to you" [1 Samuel 14:9], he would not attack.  But if the enemy said "Come up to us" [1 Samuel 14:10], he would attack. Jonathan trusted God to grant him the sign or indication he wanted. 1 Samuel 14:8-13 8 Jonathan said, We will pass over to these men and we will let them see us. 9 If they say to us, Wait until we come to you, then we will stand still in our place and will not go up to them. 10 But if they say, Come up to us, we will go up, for the Lord has delivered them into our hand, and this will be our sign. 11 So both of them let the Philistine garrison see them. And the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves. 12 The garrison men said to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, Come up to us and we will show you a thing. Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, Come up after me, for the Lord has given them into Israel’s hand. 13 Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, his armor-bearer after him; and the enemy fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him.

12.   An owth can be a warning sign; Numbers 16:38, "The censers of these men who have sinned against themselves and at the cost of their own lives. Let the censers be made into hammered plates for a covering of the altar [of burnt offering], for they were used in offering before the Lord and therefore they are sacred. They shall be a sign [of warning] to the Israelites."

13.  The first mention of owth is in Genesis 1:14, "And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be signs and tokens [of God’s provident care], and [to mark] seasons, days, and years, "

Personal Note Before God's only beloved Son came in the flesh, the constellations serve as the signs or confirmation of God's care and provision.  And the constellations speak of Jesus. Today, Jesus is THE signs or confirmation that God will care and provide for me.

Meaning

a.  An emphatic form of 113; the Lord (used as a proper name of God).

In the form adonay the word means "Lord" par excellence or "Lord over all," even as it sometimes does in the form adon (cf Deuteronomy 10:17, "For the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:" and Joshua 3:11, "Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into Jordan.")

The word adonay appears in Genesis 15:2, "And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?"

This word frequently appears in Psalms and Isaiah:

Psalm 68:17, "The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place. "

Psalm 86:3, "Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily. "

Isaiah 29:13, "Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: "

Isaiah 40:10, "Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. "

John 5:36-47

36 But I have as My witness something greater (weightier, higher, better) than that of John; for the works that the Father has appointed Me to accomplish and finish, the very same works that I am now doing, are a witness and proof that the Father has sent Me.
37 And the Father Who sent Me has Himself testified concerning Me. Not one of you has ever given ear to His voice or seen His form (His face—what He is like). [You have always been deaf to His voice and blind to the vision of Him.]

43 I have come in My Father’s name and with His power, and you do not receive Me [your hearts are not open to Me, you give Me no welcome]; but if another comes in his own name and his own power and with no other authority but himself, you will receive him and give him your approval.
44 How is it possible for you to believe [how can you learn to believe], you who [are content to seek and] receive praise and honor and glory from one another, and yet do not seek the praise and honor and glory which come from Him Who alone is God?
45 Put out of your minds the thought and do not suppose [as some of you are supposing] that I will accuse you before the Father. There is one who accuses you—it is Moses, the very one on whom you have built your hopes [in whom you trust].
46 For if you believed and relied on Moses, you would believe and rely on Me, for he wrote about Me [personally].
47 But if you do not believe and trust his writings, how then will you believe and trust My teachings? [How shall you cleave to and rely on My words?]

NB: Jesus the Man was doing exactly what God said His Promised Messiah would be doing.  Yet, the people then asked for signs and wonders and miracles.

As it was, so it is today.  How long more are we to rely on the same things as miracles, signs and wonders?

Luke 9:41

Jesus answered, O [faithless ones] unbelieving and without trust in God, a perverse (wayward, crooked and warped) generation! Until when and how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here [to Me].

We all have been searching for hard physical evidence to prove the very existence of this man called Jesus. Yet, nothing conclusive have been found thus far. But there is a piece of solid evidence glaring right at our faces but we chose to ignore it.  That piece of evidence is found in the nation of Israel. The Bible foretold the dispersion of Israel and its coming back together as a nation in just ONE day! Israel was dispersed for hundreds of years and yet not assimilated to the point of extinction.  Why? What God said will happen, happened!  Numbers 23:19, "God is not a man, that He should tell or act a lie, neither the son of man, that He should feel repentance or compunction [for what He has promised]. Has He said and shall He not do it? Or has He spoken and shall He not make it good?"

Isaiah 66:8

Who has heard of such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day? Or shall a nation be brought forth in a moment? For as soon as Zion was in labor, she brought forth her children.

Footnote: Never in the history of the world had such a thing happened before—but God keeps His word. As definitely foretold here and in Ezekiel 37:21, 22, Israel became a recognized nation, actually “born in one day.” After being away from their homeland for almost 2,000 years, the Jews were given a national homeland in Palestine by the Balfour Declaration in November, 1917. In 1922, the League of Nations gave Great Britain the mandate over Palestine. On May 14, 1948, Great Britain withdrew her mandate, and immediately Israel was declared a sovereign state, and her growth and importance among nations became astonishing.

Just as the people then were looking for the body of Moses, we are looking for that of Jesus. We will never find the body of Jesus or its remains because Jesus has been resurrected and He has ascended to heaven.

Deuteronomy 34:6
And He buried him in the valley of the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor, but no man knows where his tomb is to this day.

Acts 1:6-11

6 So when they were assembled, they asked Him, Lord, is this the time when You will reestablish the kingdom and restore it to Israel?
7 He said to them, It is not for you to become acquainted with and know [a]what time brings [the things and events of time and their definite periods] or fixed [b]years and seasons (their critical niche in time), which the Father has appointed (fixed and reserved) by His own choice and authority and personal power.
8 But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.
9 And when He had said this, even as they were looking [at Him], He was caught up, and a cloud received and carried Him away out of their sight.
10 And while they were gazing intently into heaven as He went, behold, two men [dressed] in white robes suddenly stood beside them,
11 Who said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing into heaven? This same Jesus, Who was caught away and lifted up from among you into heaven, will return in [just] the same way in which you saw Him go into heaven.


But as far as the official records are concerned, this was what happened:

Matthew 28:11-13
11 While they were on their way, behold, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had occurred.
12 And when they [the chief priests] had gathered with the elders and had consulted together, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers,
13 And said, Tell people, His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we were sleeping.

God, the Creator and Owner of the entire cosmos has intended for us to take Him at His Word. Today, we are persuaded that Jesus the Man is the Christ by reading the works that He has done during His earthly ministry according to what God said His Promised Messiah would do. The nation of Israel clears any doubts if there is a God of Jesus. God has chosen the nation of Israel to show the world that He is real. God is real (Israel).

John 14:11
Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me; or else believe Me for the sake of the [very] works themselves. [If you cannot trust Me, at least let these works that I do in My Father’s name convince you.]

The Bible speaks of tomorrow. Yet some are looking at today to authenticate what the Bible is saying about tomorrow. Even though many of the tomorrows as spoken of in the Bible have already become today, the same still question those tomorrows that have yet to become today.
