a. From 215 .
b. Illumination or luminary (in every sense including lightning, happiness).
Owr , the noun means "light".
1. The first occurrence of owr is in the Creation account: "And God said, Let there be light and there was light" [Genesis 1:3]. Here, "light" is the opposite of "darkness".
2. The opposition of "light" and "darkness" is not a unique phenomenon. It occurs frequently as a literary device:
Isaiah 5:20
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Isaiah 5:30
And in that day they [the army from afar] shall roar against [the Jews] like the roaring of the sea. And if one looks to the land, behold, there is darkness and distress; and the light [itself] will be darkened by the clouds of it.
2. In Hebrew, various antonyms of owr are used in parallel constructions; Isaiah 9:2, "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great Light; those who dwelt in the land of intense darkness and the shadow of death, upon them has the Light shined."
Personal Note "Land of intense darkness" and "shadow of death refers to the world oblivious of God. Psalm 23:4 Yes, though I walk through the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort me. |
3. The basic meaning of owr is "daylight"; Genesis 1:3, "And God said, Let there be light; and there was light."
4. The "light" given by the heavenly bodies was also known as owr; Isaiah 30:26, "Moreover, the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, like the light of seven days [concentrated in one], in the day that the Lord binds up the hurt of His people, and heals their wound [inflicted by Him because of their sins]. "
5. In the metaphorical use owr signifies life over against death; Psalm 56:13, "For You have delivered my life from death, yes, and my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life and of the living."
6. To walk in the "light" of the face of a superior [Proverbs 16:15, "In the light of the king’s countenance is life, and his favor is as a cloud bringing the spring rain."] or to God [Psalm 89:12,"The north and the south, You have created them; Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon joyously praise Your name." ], is an expression of a joyful, blessed life in which the quality of life is enhanced.
Personal Note Walking in the light of God is an expression of a joyful, blessed life in which the quality of life is enhanced. Numbers 6:24-26 24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you; 25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten [215: to become light, light up, make me alive] you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you; 26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually). |
7. The believer is assured of God's "light", even in the period of difficulties; cf Micah 7:8, "Rejoice not against me, O my enemy! When I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light to me. " [cf Psalm 23:4,"Yes, though I walk through the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort me." ]
